SOMTUBE FTF - Rear drainage of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) backfill

Use

Efficient drainage behind MSE walls is essential to isolate the reinforced soil structure from possible water infiltrations and thus preserve the geotechnical characteristics of the backfill material. Indeed, 70% of retaining walls failures are due to absent or deficient drainage system.

The SOMTUBE® FTF geocomposite drains the incoming groundwater at the interface between the reinforced soil structure and the infrastructure. It has a high and stable over time drainage capacity, even under heavy loads. This allows it to be used behind important MSE wall heights.

Depending on the project (height of the wall, slope, etc.), the geocomposite can be installed in two ways:

  • Installation from the toe of the slope
  • Installation from the top of the slope

SOMTUBE® FTF replaces the traditional granular drainage layer and the filtration geotextiles with a single product easy to install.

Benefits

  • Efficient Drainage and Filtration of the groundwater even under high loads
  • Hydraulic protection of the reinforced soil structure
  • Proven efficiency
  • Reduction of the construction time
  • Easy installation with a single product to unroll
  • Cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution as it replaces granular layers
